"Holy Trinity" and "The Annunciation" Artwork Comparison

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze two pieces of art, the "Holy Trinity," Masaccio fresco from Santa Maria Novella, Florence, c. 1428, and "The Annunciation," Merode Altarpiece, by Robert Campin, Flanders, 1425-28. Specifically, it will compare and contrast the two works, including stylistic similarities and/or differences as well as the function or purpose of these images.

probably would have originally been painted for a church or private chapel, and the religious overtones were extremely important. People wanted to show their devoutness, and so they commissioned religious paintings from well-known artists.
Privately commissioned paintings were also intended to demonstrate their wealth, as well as their strong religious beliefs, to anyone who viewed the paintings. The paintings would have played an important part in the lives of the patrons who commissioned them, and they would have been located in places of honor in the church.
The subject matter is different, of course, with one concerning the months before Christ's birth, and the other the time after his crucifixion. But the treatment is also different, and that difference may be commentary on both the subject and the painter's selection of subject matter.
