Cardiovascular disease, or CVD, is one of the mayor causes of deaths in the world. CVD is the name given to a variety of different diseases that affect the heart or any blood vessel, such as strokes, heart attacks, atherosclerosis and high blood pressure.

Here are some steps in order to avoid CVD:

• Give up smoking

Smoking is one of the mayor risk factors for developing CVD. This is so because nicotine narrows your blood vessels, making the heart to work faster in pumping blood. In this way, as the heart will beat faster, heart rate is increased. In addition, some of the oxygen in your blood will be replaced by carbon monoxide, leading to ...

to take regular exercise (mainly aerobic, even though other intense physical activity is good as well) for at least 30 minutes a day most days of the week. It burns calories, so it helps to control your weight, as well as reducing your possibilities of high cholesterol, stress, high blood pressure and diabetes, conditions that may lead to CVD. Also, it increases the amount of HDL (‘good cholesterol’) so that the level of LDL (‘bad cholesterol’) is decreased.

• Keep on a healthy weight
