1839, June 11th

So, here I am alone as Adam but this is no Garden of Eden. Perhaps I can call myself free but my condition is uncertain. I have little shelter, less food, no income, no friends, and no safety. I may be recaptured at any moment. If I am captured my condition will be worse than before. I will be chained, beaten or worse and certainly sold down the river to a place where there is not the slightest hope of escape. Yet, seasoned with freedom these few strawberries I have gathered may be the sweetest anyone has ever tasted.

1839, June 25th

I must question whether joining forces with Huck was as fortunate as it first seemed. My supposed ally ignored my warning about the bad luck of handing a snake skin and now I have reaped the misfortune of being beaten by a snake. It will take all my powers of curing and conjuring to survive. Of course, Huck’s pap’s whiskey will help a lot, too.

1839, June 30th

Huck has proved to be a good ally again. The information he gathered in town enabled us to escape the island just ahead of the runaway hunters. The runaway hunters were also my allies in a way, for without the motivation they provided, Huck might have been content to stay on the island for years. Now we are bound for the free states and Huck is my ticket. I repaid him today by using my carpentry skills to fix up the raft for travel. I really am worth 800 dollars, maybe more.
