Influences On Communication

We give and receive messages by a process called communication. These messages influence our own and others behavior and self-concept. Therefore, the way we communicate with others become important as it provides an over view of what we think about others and how others think we are and we believe we are. Message can be communicated verbally as well as through gestures and body language. Confusing messages can be given when our body language says one thing, and our words another. For example, if we are really upset about something and we smile and try to pretend everything is okay, our body language will probably would act quite the opposite.

If we are given continually negative feedback, our self-esteem and low self-worth in comparison to others will go down. Since our self-esteem affects our behavior, which, in turn, alter the communication performance. Self-esteem also affects the communication as people with low self-esteem may well communicate less than those with high self-esteem. They will be unwilling to take risks in social encounters and would not be confident, persuasive and convincing. They may speak hesitantly and will often over-use some of the cliches for gaining the approval from others. People with high self-esteem will speak confidently and fluently and will generally be willing to take the risk of admitting when they're wrong, which can often contribute considerably to their persuasiveness.
