Johnson & Johnson was created in the mid-1880's with the invention of the first ready-made surgical dressings by the Johnson brothers. Over the next few decades, the company expanded its range of products and grew. By 1919, the company has achieved international growth, with the establishment of a Canadian affiliate. In 1924, Johnson & Johnson created its first overseas affiliate in Great Britain.

The next step for the company was to increase its product diversification. The company was given new direction in 1932 when its leaders established a a firm policy of decentralization, which gave its affiliates the autonomy to work toward their own futures. A creed was written that established the company's socially responsible approach to conducting business.
