The preoccupation of our society is definitely a contribution to the complex development and self conceptual problems for adolescents. In Linea Due’s book Joining The Tribe she gives us many examples of how when gay people realize they are different and discriminated against they lose self esteem and become depressed. Many of them commit suicide and those that don’t live an adolescence of silence and oppression, rarely being able to speak up without being struck down by peers.
