Kingston's “No Name Woman”: Community's Role



The community plays a significant role in Maxine Hong Kingston’s
essay “No Name Woman.” She describes how one can be totally rejected by
the community if it’s rules and regulations are violated. Violation is
considered a sin. Cultural values mark the community, which in turn shapes
an individual’s identity. This essay reflects the assault of communal
assimilation on an individual. “The village housed no strangers. All the
village were kinsmen” shows that villagers knew every family living there

having sex. She could not let anyone know what was happening with her. She
had no one to listen to her and understand her misery. She did not have
anyone to rescue her out of the fateful situation. Her own family treated
