Langston Hughes Impact On The Harlem Renaissance

Langston Hughes impacted the Harlem renaissance in many unique ways. He was a successful American poet, novelist, playwright, and social activist. Hughes is most commonly known for his signature poem, “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” which was published by the (NAACP) in 1921. During this time Langston became a part of Harlem’s thriving cultural movement where he amounted to one of the top American poets of his decade. He was known for being fiercely proud of his heritage and identity as a man of color. This can be seen throughout his works where he crossed many racial boundaries. because his father left him leaving the country and his mother was unable to take care of him due to unsteady employment. It was during this time where he discovered his love for writing. This can be seen through a quote where Hughes states, “Then it was that books began to happen to me, and I began to believe in nothing but books and the wonderful world in books - where if people suffered, they suffered in beautiful language.” Which really showed his outlook on life because he experienced so much suffering.

Early works

After graduating high school, Hughes reached out to his father for financial aid so he could attend college. His dream was to become a successful writer, but his father would only support him if he studied engineering instead. So for a while Langston Hughes abandoned his dream to go study engineering.
