Liberalism During Depression

Once the American economy entered a state of depression and instability in the late 1920ā€™s there was a need for change. President Franklin Roosevelt was the man for the job and he created a series of economic programs under a plan known as the New Deal. This was a step in a new direction for the United States Government and it was viewed as very liberal. The New Deal in fact did represent a radical departure from previous American traditions in government and the economy.

was created to promote Labor Unions, the WPA was created to open job opportunities by employing millions to carry out public works projects, and the Social Security Act was created ensure social welfare and social insurance for the old-age and disabled. Other aspects of the New Deal were programs that were developed to aid tenant farmers and migrant workers. The final and strongest example of the government representing a radical departure from economic American traditions is the Emergency Banking Act. This was an act developed by Roosevelt that closed the insolvent banks, reorganized them, and then reopened them once they were strong enough to survive. This reveals the liberalistic ideas behind the New Deal and the radical change from previous American traditions in government and the economy.
