Why Do You Geek The Library?

I geek the library simply because I must. It's hardwired into my DNA. My mother, a once-a-week-never-paid-a-penny-in-fines library patron is as responsible for this trait as she is my brown eyes. Every Friday afternoon, we walked to the library and, as the quiet swoosh of the towering oak door closed behind us, I was catapulted into a world of unexplored possibilities cleverly disguised by colorful spines. Resisting the call of the books was impossible.

Mom to sign this, Karen." Taken aback by this unexpected request, I was undeterred. The moment the library door met its jamb behind me, I bolted down the stairs and retraced my path. "Mom," I gasped. "Please sign this!" She dotted the final "i," I snagged the card, and thundered back.

Moments later, I stood in front of Miss Ide.

"Karen," she whispered swapping my white card for the coveted blue one with my name neatly printed on the top, "you can go upstairs now."

I climbed the wide wooden staircase, savoring every ray of sunshine that lit my way to the Children's Room.

"May I help you?" Mrs. Denly, the children's librarian asked.

"Oh, yes," I proudly replied, "I have a library card. May I borrow some books?"

Fifty-seven years later, I still marvel at how that blue card changed my life. I have met friends - real and fictional-at the library, looked forward to quiet evenings alone, and still experience that sense of exciting possibilities as I push through the ...
