Buying slaves that were sold into slavery was generally the most expensive way to gain slaves. There was a large slave market and auctions were held in public domains. During the sale of a slave they were usually naked with a scroll hanging around their neck, on which was written their good and bad qualities, to let buyers know what kind of slave they were getting. These descriptions help buyers to know if the slave they were looking at was going to be good working out in the field, or if they would be better as a house assistant.
Sometimes families sold their own children into slavery if they were poor and couldn’t afford to eat, buy daily necessities and desperately needed the money. This seemed very drastic but still happened fairly frequently. Many Romans who found their self in debt would actually sell themselves into slavery to pay off the debt owed by their families.
