Lithium is a soft, silvery-white metal which reacts vigorously with water and has the lowest density of all metals. It comes from the alkali metal group which is found on the periodic table of elements.

Discovery and Naming:

Lithium was discovered by Johan August Arfvedson in 1817 in Stockholm, Sweden when he did an analysis of petalite ore. The origin of name comes from the Greek word "lithos" meaning "stone".

Lithium does not found as a metal in nature, but is found combined in small amounts in nearly all rocks and in the waters of many mineral springs. Spodumene, petalite, ...
