in the role of Jo who is the character of central importance in the book and also in its cinematic adaptation. In the new movie version of the book, everything has been done skillfully to accomplish the lasting impact that the novel leaves on the readers. Little women is not an ordinary book and so the movie versions are required to keep up with the extraordinariness of the wonderful novel by focusing on performances, sets, costumes, music and landscape. Individual performances especially by Ryder and Susan Sarandon make the movie the best cinematic adaptation of the book so far. Ryder gives a very powerful performance as the outspoken and immensely independent though slightly boyish Jo who refuses to accept societal norms yet grows up to be a woman of substance.
