THE HORSE DEALER'S DAUGHTER

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the short story "The Horse Dealer's Daughter," by D.H. Lawrence. Specifically, it will show how understanding of those characters helps us understand the problematic ending of the story. D.H. Lawrence's characterization makes the reader understand and even sympathize with two far from perfect characters, who stumble upon each other and then hold on literally for dear life. His clear and compelling characters make the dark ending of the story seem more plausible and even relatively realistic.

sets the stage for her suicide attempt, knowing she wants to be with her mother, and only feels secure in a graveyard. This is a seriously disturbed young woman.
The reader knows all this because of the paragraphs of description Lawrence writes in the middle of the story. Mabel is desperate, and it is easy to see why after reading these passages. She feels she has nothing in her life, nothing to look forward to but more poverty, hunger, and despair. She is a proud woman, and poverty is very hard for her to bear. Her decision to end her life seems totally rational to her, there will be one less mouth to feed, and she will no longer have to live such an unfulfilling and empty life.
The doctor, Ferguson, is not quite as simple to understand. He is a doctor who is continually sick, which is ironic, so it seems he needs someone to take care of him, while he concentrates on his sick patients. He seems lonely, why else would he fall madly in love with a woman in a churchyard? He ...
