I don’t usually go to hear authors, but attending the Lorrie Moore reading makes me want to go to more readings by various authors. When you read a book by yourself, you don’t know exactly what kind of tone to give the story you are reading. While Lorrie Moore was reading from her book, “A Gate at the Stairs”, she was very delicate, yet amusing because of the little comedic segments that she threw into the story. I understand because when I try to write something, it is sometimes too difficult because I have too many ideas. When describing characters, Moore clearly stated that you can’t ask too much from a character. People will respond to individual characters in different ways, and she accepts the fact that you don’t have to like the character. She even said that she might not like the character, but sometimes that person has to be there to complete the character.
When asked about challenges in writing, Moore put a lot of emphasis on avoiding scenes. This is where my problem is as well. I have an idea but I am not sure how to expand on it to make others understand. One may know exactly what they want to say in their mind, but when asked to put it down on paper, it is difficult and seems impossible until it finally clicks.
