In the essay “love as if” John Shand claims that is contradictory, bipolar, and irrational. Love is dipolar, and reasonable; Shand claims. He compares freewill and love because normative cannot exist where there is no free choice. He adds that love is reasonable by saying “no beloved wants to hear that they are loved merely reasonably well or in a reasonable way”. Love is something that we want to be normative and non-rational that’s why they contradict and cause conflicts. Shand concludes that love is paradoxical and that people think of love in a contradictory way and even though nothing may be wrong with this, however getting people to admit this is hard because people resent the fact of being told they live there life in a contradictory way.
