In today’s society, we sometimes forget to think about the people who’s legacy got us where we are now. If it wasn’t for Garret Morgan inventing the stoplight, traffic would be more of a disaster than it is now! As well as people like George Washington Carver and Madame C.J. Walker. Without them, we wouldn’t have the lead in science and technology that we do now. However, I’m not going to talk about them. Nope, today I will be telling the story of Mae C. Jemison. The first African- American Female Astronaut to go to space.

Mae C. Jemison was born on October 17th, 1956, in Decatur, Alabama, but later moved to Chicago, Illinois. Her mother was a school teacher, and her father a ...

After graduating from Stanford, she entered Cornell University Medical College to pursue her career in the medical field. While at Cornell, Jemison expanded her horizons by visiting and studying at countries such as Cuba, Kenya and Cambodia, where she obtained her Masters in 1981. She later became a general practitioner and Joined the Peace Corps of Liberia and Sierra Leone.

In 1985, Mae returned to the U.S. and decided to follow her dream of becoming an astronaut. In October of that year, Jemison was one of the 15 candidates chosen out of 2,000 for admission into the NASA training program. After a year of training, she became an astronaut and earned the title of Science Mission Specialist. On September 12, 1992 Mae C. Jemison and 6 other members flew into space aboard the Endeavour for 8 days total. Making her the first African- American Female to go into space.

Since Mae’s expedition, there has been 7 other African- Americans to go into space; 3 of them being women. ...
