Melanoma

Melanoma is the most common and the most serious type of skin cancer. Yearly, more than 50,000 people in the U.S. learn that they have melanoma. Melanoma begins in skin cells called melanocytes which make melanin that gives skin its color and also protects the deeper layer of the skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. As you get older this deadly cancer increases the chances of infectivity. This cancer has the ability to spread throughout your whole body. This spreading process is called metastasis. If melanoma is found early your chances of recovery are high, but if not, metastasis will happen which makes it very hard to maintain and treat.

If you have a large number of moles you have to be on a steady watch for melanoma because it drastically increases your chance to develop it. A weak immune system or simply not protecting yourself from the blistering sun can increase the chances as well. Melanoma doesn’t like to stay away, so if you’ve had it once, be prepared for it to come back. If you have a family history of this disease its best for you to have your doctor do a checkup. Tanning booths and sunlamps, which use ultraviolet (UV) lights, can damage skin cells and increase the risk of melanoma.

Signs and symptoms

Melanoma usually appears as a change in the size, shape, color, or feel of an existing mole. Watch for black, blue, or any abnormal looking spots or lesions on the skin.
