On Tuesday, January 5th, 1999, two air to air military clashes between American and Iraqi forces occurred approximately 15 minutes apart from one another. In the first incident, American Air Force F-15 jets fired on two Iraqi MIG jets. The Pentagon says the Iraqi Jets were flying in the restricted “no flight zone” over southern Iraq. According to the Pentagon, the U.S. warplanes were patrolling the no flight zone when they detected that they had been latched onto with radar. The F-15s then fired -and missed- three, air to air missiles on the Iraqi jets. Strangely though, the Iraqi jets retreated rather than returning fire. This military clash was just one of the three military clashes which has happened in the past two or so weeks. Despite the close encounter, President Hussein stated that he would continue to send warplanes over the no-flight-zones. These blatant disregards for the no-flight-zone restrictions seem to be part of Saddam Hussein’s plan to force the UN to withdraw weapons inspectors from Iraq.
