The film, Into the West - script by Jim Sheridan, directed by Mike Newell, direction of photography by Tom Sigel, produced by John Cavendish and Tim Palmer, and starring Gabriel Byrne, Ellen Barkin, Ruaidtri Conroy and Ciaran Fitzgerald - contains several themes, each dealing with a prominent issue in society, and about how we deal with such issues as the relate to us. The film is about an Irish Traveller, who has lost most of what is important to him, and is only holding on to life by the thread that is his children. In losing his wife Mary, John Riley lost himself. He was obviously a great man in the time she was with him; “King of all Travellers”, the youngest one ever, seemingly high-spirited, respectable, and fearless as Grandfather points out. With the loss of his wife, and the rejection of settled society toward him and his people, he loses sight of his own honor, and that which made his people, his family, and himself, great. This loss is unfortunate, and it appears he had a particularly strong connection with, and love for his wife. In losing her he may feel he has lost all that was of value to him, but if he had taken the time to just look around, see all the wonderful things and people around him – his boys, her father, and those others of his band, all who share in this loss - and remember ...
