My Unbelievable Move

Brampton, Canada, my home town, was the place I loved to live. With little to no pollution and, a neighborhood, which was surrounded by a lake, was the best place to be when you wanted to be alone. Around my neighborhood, there was the feeling of peace and unity. Everybody knew each other and there was a trust between everyone. Then all of a sudden, my lifestyle became totally different as my dad wanted to move to the United States in order to get a job. My family and I decided that my dad would go first and then I would go, followed by my mom, brother, and grandparents.

I don’t know anybody, and I have to go to a new school.” As we drove closer and closer to Chicago, I had fears crawling up and haunting me. The eight hour drive was almost over, but my fears and doubtful thoughts were increasing by the hour. I was having a culture shock. After we got to Chicago, I had a new fear: school. I was going to a middle school in which I did not know anybody, but the fact that scared me the most that I had to start school from the third trimester, in April, and also I was fearful because I did not know about the curriculum in the United States.

My first day of school was terrifying, I felt as if I moved to a completely new planet! The United States was way different than Canada in every way possible. In Canada everybody cared about education and they tried to get good grades but, as I saw the people at my new school, were here to “show off,” rather than to study. I immediately thought to myself “Popularity will not matter in the end, but education will.” ...
