"But mum, I'm scared to go to sleep. The monsters under my bed will get me."
"Timmy, there are no such things as monsters. Your dad and I have already told you that." Timmy's mother attempted a firm expression, but she couldn't prevent a smile from hinting at the edges of her lips. She and her husband had had this conversation with their son many times recently, and he was still convinced terrible monsters lived under his bed.
"But there ARE monsters under my bed. I heard 'em." Timmy's face darkened into a pouting expression. "Why can't I sleep with you and daddy?"

think it's time you stayed in your own bed?"
Timmy shook his head "No".
"There, there kiddo," his father soothed, sympathetically tousling the soft locks of blonde on Timmy's head. "Where's my tough little soldier, huh?" Timmy averted his eyes, attempting to avoid his father's smiling face.
"I don't wanna be a soldier." His lower lip puffed out in an expression which was meant to convey anger, but which mad his father's smile broaden, thus increasing Timmy's ire.
"Tell you what," his father said. "You climb into bed and mummy and I will check to make sure there are no monsters under there. OK?" Grudgingly, Timmy nodded and climbed onto his bed, his eyes still glossy with the threat of tears. He watched expectantly as his mother and father knelt to look under the bed.
"Nope. Don't see any monsters under here. How about you mummy?" he asked, blowing his wife a kiss and winking at her under the bed. She smiled, rolling her eyes, and replied, "No monsters over here either. ...

squeezed his stuffed dinosaur, Herman, close to his chest and pulled the covers tight against him. He heard the door to his parent's room slam shut down the hall and then the house was silent. Already, Timmy's eyes began to scan the shadows and the corners and crevices of the room where monsters might hide. He knew monsters were hiding out there. He had seen glimpses of them, heard their sinister whispers echo from the darkness. With wide eyes, he continued searching the room.
Something thwacked on one side of the room and Timmy's eyes instantly shot toward the sound. The curtains of his window were drawn tight, but the shadow of something moved beyond. The wind howled ...
