In today’s world of mass media, many people seek information as well as entertainment from their television set. Talk shows have become increasingly popular. Two of the most popular talk show hosts of the past decade are Oprah Winfrey and Jerry Springer. While both host their own talk show, Oprah seems to be more reliable and respected.
Oprah Winfrey hosts a daytime talk show with guests and a live audience. She usually limits her guests to one or two and does not have uncontrolled audience participation.
While Jerry Springer also hosts a daytime talk show, he usually has several guests on stage, with seemingly uncontrolled audience participation.

Springer, on the other hand, hosts a talk show that relies on issues that deal with sex or scandal, with topics such as cheating spouses, sexual triangles, and lying friends. Many of his guests use colorful, vulgar language and many times the show erupts in a violent argument or physical fight. Rather than laughing or crying with his audience, Jerry is usually antagonizing them into disagreement. His talk show is rarely suitable for a young audience.
The audiences at the Oprah show are predominately middle-class women, many of whom are housewives or career women. They seem to enjoy the topics she discusses and feel that her shows “hit close to home.” The participation of her audience is calm, controlled and non-violent. Many times her audience is also laughing or crying with Oprah and her guests.
In contrast, the audience at the Jerry Springer show is younger, with several male participants. The audience often becomes uncontrolled, shouting or cursing at the guests ...
