Pearl Harbor
On December 7, 1941 the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the Empire of Japan (Ayers et al, 2009). Japan had been planning the attack for over a year. It was devastating to America, taking out most of the fleet located at the naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. This attack lead to the United States entering of World War II (H.P. Willmott, 1981).

When Japan began trying to seize land in Guangxi, France signed and armistice with Germany. This was on 22 June 1940. This lead to an establishment of Vichy government in unoccupied parts of France. Vichy France controlled France’s oversea possessions, like Indochina (The World War II Network, 2010). With this, Japan began pressuring the Vichy government to close the railway for trade. Japan and Vichy Indochina signed an accord in September 22, 1940, which granted basing and transit rights, but limited amounts of troops stationed in the area at one time.
