Oxycodone is a drug in a class of medications called opiate analgesics. It works by changing the way the brain and nervous system respond to pain. It is prescribed by doctors to treat severe pain, but it used to be prescribed in small doses to treat diarrhea. Oxycontin is a single ingredient time-release oxycodone pill made by Purdue Pharma. Before it became popular, oxycodone was used for many purposes including decreased anxiety, respiratory depression, meiosis, and cough suppression. Similar to heroin, oxycontin can also be melted down and injected intravenously. Finally, another dangerous and addictive way to ingest it is to smoke it after removing the time release. Because of the ability to remove the time release, many people have abused the drug and become addicted. This causes numerous problems for people.
