Law of 1850 was obeyed for a time but later rejected by the North. This rejection of the law in the North made the South angry. In New York of 1854 Ralph Waldo Emerson stated that slavery was no longer peaceful but aggresive and dangerous as seen with the beating of a Northern Senator by a Southern Senator. The Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 created opposition to slavery and thus making the North unwilling to follow and carry out it just as Massachusetts did with the previous Fugitive Slave Law when it declared it invalid and nullified it.
The U.S. during the period between 1846 and 1860 largely ignored the issue of slavery until it started to boil over. The U.S. simply just permitted the agitation to proceed and made little attempts to stop it until it threatened to endanger the Union. This was seen with the passage of compromise after compromise especially in the Compromise of 1850.
