Prohibition

After the first world war the U.S. government put prohibition into effect. It was the 18th amendment of the constitution. It made selling or buying alcohol illegal. Although the idea was to reduce crime and violence in the cities it ended up causing it. Many gangs became involved in the illegal distribution of alcohol or bootlegging. Even though it was illegal many people made homemade alcohol which could cause blindness or even death in some cases. Places called speakeasy's served bootlegged alcohol to the public.
