Rats As Pets
What comes to mind when you think of rats? Most probably think of skinny, black creatures that spread disease. Maybe you think of beady-eyed trouble makers that chew holes in clothes and perhaps, if you happen to own a farm, they’re cornfield destroyers. Are rats all they’re thought to be? Are rats pests, or do they make excellent pets?
Whenever I was asked what kind of pet I had, and answered “rats,” friends would usually think it was a joke or would be shocked. To see friends pet my rats was entertaining—my friend would carefully place his hand on the furry thing’s back, and would slide his hand back and forth like you do with a mop on a floor. (they also don’t like to go near places they play, eat, or drink). For food they eat a mixture of birdseed and cat food, and getting a small bag of each could last for a long time. They play all the time, they like to chase each other, climb up your arms and on your shoulders, and playfully steal treats from each other. So rats are intelligent, furry, and cost-efficient, or, in short—perfect pets. What is it about rats that make people scared, find creepy, or just don’t like about them?
What I’ve noticed with pet rats is that they run around and play a lot; they are also very social creatures and actually need other rats around them. Since rats like moving and playing so much, they need roomy cages. Cages can cost anywhere from 10 to 20 dollars. Together with small bags of birdseed and cat food, about 5 dollars for each bag, it totals about $30 for the first time—and most of it was the price of the cage! According to researchers, rats do care and will take care of their own. Ironic, it is that to be called a “rat” would be calling someone a backstabber!
It could be argued that rats spread disease, they caused the plague that wiped out millions during the middle ages…didn’t they? Wild rats can cause salmonella, but so can a lot of other wild animals—like mice, raccoons, and armadillos—basically salmonella can come from any kind of animal.
