Slavery began in the colonies of America in the 1600's. There were a lot of factors that caused slavery. The majority of slaves in this time period worked on plantations. What is stated in the following paragraphs are the reasons for how slavery was started and details of Plantation slavery.
Slavery was caused because the english settlers needed to make money and indentured servants were declining they decided they could still produce products by having slaves work for them since there was a higher abundance of them. The warm climate of slave life, the many fields of fertile soil, long growing seasons and many waterways provided great conditions for farming plantations in the south. ...

Before slaves came into the picture, indentured servants were the only source of labor colonists had. The population of indentured servants was decreasing because of many factors. They were running away from the masters, dying from diseases. When word of the treatment of indentured servants was heard in England less people wanted to become indentured servants because of the treatment they received from the masters.
The indentured servants were decreasing fast and the need for labor was need very much so.
Tobacco was the main source of income for most of the colonists. All of the colonies economy was based on tobacco. Tobacco growing required a lot of land and large work forces.
