Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson

Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson are not widely known. They were both preachers and had the similar beliefs. Williams and Hutchinson were both tried and both got kicked out of Massachusetts Bay Colony because of their beliefs. Williams believed that the colonists should break away from the Church of England. Hutchinson took freedom of religion too seriously and was accused of heresy.
Roger Williams was born in London, England in 1603. Williams grew up in a part of London called Holborn. When Williams was a teenager his writing skills caught the eye of Sir Edward Coke. Coke managed to get Williams into Sutton’s Hospital, which is now called Charterhouse School, in 1621. After ...

Williams moved to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1631. For a while Williams was a teacher and eventually became a Salem minister. In America he soon found that his ideas were too different from the original beliefs for the fellow colonists.
Williams had strongly believed that the colonists should treat the Native Americans nicely. He also strongly believed that they should break away from the Church of England. His views were frowned upon and he was put on trial. As a result from the trial Williams was forced to leave the colony as a punishment. Williams took his family with him as he left.
While he was traveling for a new home, Williams often met many Native Americans. After many run-ins with Native Americans, Williams finally bought some land off of the Narragansett Indians.
