Romeo And Juliet: Feud Between The Families

After reading William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”, one concludes that the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets includes the entire families of both households, not only the young men. The feud, being a shared hatred between both families, is so bad that just the sight of either family would provoke a brawl that may even lead to death. In Act 1, Scene 1, during the brawl there is evidence of household involvement, when Old Capulet almost enters the fight. Also, during the Capulet party, when Tybalt sees Romeo, and wishes to execute him on the spot, we feel the intensity of the family hatred. After the death of Tybalt, Lady Capulet wishes to have vengeance for her nephews ...

seen in the older family members. At this point old Capulet says, “What noise is this, give me my long sword (I/i/73).” “My sword, I say! Old Montague has come and flourishes his blade in front of me (I/i/75).”
The father is very forthright saying that he wishes to murder a Montague. His words demonstrate a cold hatred, and display heartless emotions towards his bitter enemy.
The blind hate between the families becomes further developed as you progress in Act I Scene iv. Once Romeo has actually entered the party and begins to enjoy himself the Capulet Kinsman Tybalt informs his uncle that a Montegue is in the house. Immediately, Tybalt orders his servants to get his rapier (a type of sword). As shown on line 53, “This by his voice is a Montegue. Fetch me my rapier boy…To strike him dead I hold it not a sin.” This statement clearly illustrates the hatred between not only the direct family but also the older members of the household.
