In The Rules of the Game, Jean Renoir paints a satirical portrait of the decadent French aristocracy prior to World War II. The scene where Andre Jurieu (Roland Toutain) arrives at La Coliniere is of particular importance, for it is the first time he sees Christine (Nora Gregor) since his plane trip. Through his use of dialogue, continuous shooting and mise-en scene, Renoir explores their relationship to their society and to each other. Andre’s arrival completes the film’s third love triangle, impelling the narrative forward and touching on important themes regarding love, friendship, and the nature of relations between the sexes.

The two halt as they see the arriving aviator, and Christine’s clenched hands and rigid, immobile posture make notable expression of the tension she feels regarding their forthcoming meeting. Rather than cutting, the stationary camera tracks ninety degrees until it is behind the two women. The continuous camera movement reveals the object of her attention and smoothly integrates the two into one shot. The mise en scene of this particular shot lends many important insights into the nature of their relationship. As a somewhat subjective shot, it shows the importance of this arrival into the stationary Christine’s world. The doorway, located in the lower left corner of the screen, frames the approaching men.
