Outline the similarities and differences between Milgram’s (1963) and Gibson’s (2013) studies of obedience.

This essay is an outline of Stanley Milgram’s (1963) and Stephen Gibson’s (2013) studies of obedience. The main purpose of both these studies aims were to find out what makes people do harm to others. Milgram’s infamous obedience studies were motivated both personally and professionally by the story of Adolf Eichmann who in the 2nd world war (1942) carried out mass murders on Jews in a gas chamber. being, the participants actually thought they were taking part in a memory test and consisted of a teacher, learner and experimenter (actually a confederate) and every time the learner got a question wrong the teacher would administer a shock. The shocks went from mild 15v to 435v and despite the learner’s protests (actually a recording) only 35 per cent refused to go all the way Milgram (1963) cited in Banyard (2012). During the experiment the teachers would stop and turn to the experimenter trying to argue their way out of administrating the shocks but were given a series of prods of orders telling them they must go on, and responsibility was deferred to the experimenter (actually an actor wearing a uniform) and most of them continued for the sake of the experiment, indicating a very high level of obedience to authority.
