Social norms are always changing. The changes over the last century have been very drastic. Even this decade has seen some very dramatic changes. One very visible social norm is the style of clothing. Styles rarely stay the same from one year to the next. What is in one day can be completely stupid the next. Just look at the clothes they wore in the eighties.
Social norms go deeper than just the style of clothing that you wear. One interviewee described a typical school day that was very different from the ones that we encounter today. include looking up porn on the Internet and fighting. Swearing in class is usually punished with mild reprimand from the teacher. Fifty years ago, and even only twenty years ago, you didn’t dare say even the mildest swear word in the presence of a teacher.
Another norm that has changed a lot is what teenagers do for entertainment. In the early twenties, teenagers generally didn’t have a lot of free time. What little free time they had was spent ice skating, swimming, and at hot dog roasts. Things got a little more interesting in the late sixties with the advent of the muscle car. One interviewee told me many stories of drag racing in his ’69 Dodge Dart. He bought it brand new when he was 18 for the lofty price of $3400. Insurance was cheap and so was gas.
Today, the only place teenagers can drag race cars in excess of 300 horsepower is in the world of video games. Teenagers today spend most of their free time playing Playstation and Nintendo 64 or watching television. ...
