In James Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues,” addiction plays a significant role in both the narrator and Sonny’s lives, and also has a great impact on their relationship. Through the story, narrator’s opinion of his brother gives the reader ideas about Sonny, his overall nature, and character while they were young and how this relates to his heroin problem. Early signs show that Sonny could not have avoided the heroin and that he had more of a natural tendency to resort to something such as substance abuse to help him with his problems. Sonny develops a method of coping with the things in his life, and heroin easily became on of those “methods”. ...

Going through life and experiencing many things one can only have many different stress/pain relievers or other options to help deal with any problems he might have. For Sonny, heroin was most likely an effortless escape and the easiest way to deal with his own problems. When put together with his music, this drug became his escape and just another easy solution. Although the brothers lives completely different lifestyles, and seem like they are completely two different kinds of people, the narrator shares one important characteristic with Sonny and that is the fact that he also has a destructive method of coping and dealing with his pain.
