Introduction

The City of Milwaukee had a population of 596,974 in 2000. This represented a 5% decline since 1990. The metropolitan area had 1,500,741 in 2000. This means that the City of Milwaukee represents a relatively small and decreasing share of the overall metropolitan population. Milwaukee is made up of 8 districts or neighborhoods, the Inner and Outer North Side, Riverwest, East Side, Downtown (CBD), Industrial and the Inner and Outer South Sides. The average throughout the entire city is a population decrease of 5.0% which means that Milwaukee is losing people to the suburbs that dominate outside the city. As it shows on this map there is one area in particular that is losing people at a relatively fast rate, 20.0% or more, and that region is known as the Inner North Side and parts of the Riverwest area. There are however three distinct regions that seem to be increasing in population by 5.0% or more and that is in the Outer North Side, Downtown (CBD) and the Inner South Side. This doesn't surprise me because people are leaving the city to move into a more suburb area (Outer North Side) and also there is an increase in the downtown which as we have seen, empty nesters and young peoples with college degrees are moving downtown because it is a fun atmosphere and where jobs are located.
