“Spring and (Not) All

Spring and All is often referred to as Williams's most experimental and avant-garde book. (5) Yet when it was first published, the slim volume barely caught anyone's eye. Williams had been rejected by several publishers before Robert McAlmon, who was living in France and courting the Parisian intellectual scene (and had published Stein's The Making of Americans), agreed to have his Contact Press print an edition of 300 in the fall of 1923 in Dijon. Most of the copies sent to America were confiscated by customs, notes Paul Mariani, who remarks that "Spring and All all but disappeared as a cohesive text until its republication nearly ten years after Williams' death" ...

As you might have guessed from the title, Spring is and important part of this poem. What I found most interesting was that Spring actually becomes a character of sorts in the poem. This important season is the backdrop for the poem. It is with this I will show not only the important of Spring, but how Williams’ uses human-like adjectives to describe this season as well as showing that the “new” is not just a season. The concept of Spring means much more than a season. From what I remember in class this poem was written after the WW1era. The country was in excitement over art and new forms of lifestyles such as Bohemians. Spring to me meant a change in the world, not a season at all.
