Summary Of Terkel's My American Century



After I began reading the book My American Century by Studs Terkel,
I quickly became interested in reading further. At first, I thought it
would be a long boring book to have to read, but I soon was very anxious to
continue my reading. The reading that I personally enjoyed the most was
the one of C.P. Ellis, the former Ku Klux Klan member.
This reading comes from a man who is fifty-three years old and was
at one time the “exalted cyclops”, or president of the Durham chapter of
the KKK in North Carolina. His story tells of his early years and schooling,
which only lasted until the eighth grade. It also tells of many of his
father's struggles just to get by, and early demise.

that he did particularly “hate” one of the
black people in town more than most-Ann Atwater. He claimed to hate her
specifically because every time he went into town, she was leading some
kind of demonstration. I didn't think she would really be all that
important to the rest of the story, but in my eyes she's the most important.

To make a long story short, Mr. Ellis began going to meetings for
the city council or something of that sort. It was there that he decided
he could start to come out in the open about his views on the integration
of black students in the town schools. He spoke honestly without holding
anything back. The blacks, of course, had extremely different views.
Though he was starting to get some positive feed back from councilman and
some others.
Mr. Ellis thought this was good until one day he saw one of these
men one the street and the man crossed the street so that he wouldn't run
