Teens are often influenced by peer pressure to try drinking, and are led to believe that it is fun and will make them cool. Others may be in it just for the thrill but do not realize the large risk they are taking. Some people even have it in their genes, such as by having a parent who favors drinking or has a tolerance to the effects of alcohol.

Whatever the reason may be, it is still a crime and no one is exempt from the law. It is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to drink, purchase, or possess alcohol in the United States. In some states, many of the offenses are misdemeanors, but in some states they can be felonies. Being criminally charged can have a major effect on a teen’s life.
