The Apology Essay

In The Apology, Socrates reflects on his life and defends himself as he faces trial for charges brought up by his accusers. Socrates’ accusers charged him as an “evil-doer”, a man who corrupts the youth and thought to teach false beliefs of his own god, “investigating things beneath the earth and in the skies”(1). Socrates explains the truth of his charges throughout his defense and the reason why he feels these charges are being brought against him. I believe Socrates is not guilty of corrupting the youth or teaching false beliefs at all. In fact, I believe he is not guilty of any wrong doing but is facing these charges because he was misunderstood and the people of Athens disliked him ...

were the wisest they became angry at his response. I do not think they knew what his true purpose for conducting his investigations was. It was not to prove a point for to the people but for himself.

The beliefs Socrates shared with the people were not his own and were also not false. After investigating the truth of the oracle he knew why the oracle said he was the wisest. He was one of the wisest men because he was not ignorant like those he had spoken with. So now since he knew this he was able to share his beliefs with everyone. Because he made his point known men disliked him and I think they felt threatened by him. But Socrates didn’t mean any harm, he just wanted to let the people know how they saw their selves was wrong. But men still felt threatened by him so they spread more and more rumors so that others would think poorly of him.

I believe one of the biggest reasons for the charges being brought against him was because they despised him for his honesty ...
