The Articles of Confederation

The Articles of Confederation is a document that was the first centralized constitution of what was the early part of America. The articles were drafted on June 12, 1776, a day after appointing a committee to prepare a draft of the Declaration of Independence. The Second Continental Congress resolved to appoint a committee of 13 people to prepare a draft of a constitution for uniting the states. The committee met repeatedly, and chairman John Dickinson presented their results to the Congress on July 12, 1776.

The Land Ordinance of 1785 and the Northwest Ordinance created territory government, to set up procedures for the allowance of brand new states, the separation of land into 36 townships, and set 1 plot of land in each township for public use. This system represented a sharp break from unwanted colonization, as in Europe, and provided the base for the rest of American continental expansion through the era.
