The Articles of Confederation and the United States Constitution

The United States' first constitution, the Articles of Confederation, was composed by a congress that had previously directed most of its attention to fighting and winning the War for Independence. At America's inception, Americans had a deep-seated fear of a central authority and a long-standing loyalty to individual states. Ultimately, the Articles proved inadequate in resolving America's economic depression and interstate rivalries. Recognizing these concerns, Congress called for a Constitutional Convention to revise the Articles of Confederation. ...

its citizens than the unicameral federal congress. A Confederation government, which is considered to be more democratic, made it vulnerable to the calamity amongst its citizens. After, the War for Independence, America owed debts to foreign governments and its citizens. American citizens too owed various lenders, such as banks. With no expressed permission for Congress to raise revenue, debtors could not be reimbursed. In time, the fear that financial ruin could cause the demise of democracy, the Confederation congress approved ratification of the Articles. Eventually, individual states surrendered powers to a newly defined central government under the Constitution, effectively placing the federal government as the, "Supreme law of the land."
