The Missouri Compromise was passed in 1820. It did not end the debate over slavery. Trouble started brewing when Texas wanted to be a state. One problem: there was no free state to accompany Texas into the Union. As the Missouri Compromise states that a slave state and a free state must enter the Union together (Stated on COMPTON’S ENCYCLOPEDIA ONLINE.).
Then, in 1845, Congress allowed Texas into the Union. Congress also said that, with the consent of Texas legislature, it could be divided into five separate states. The Missouri Compromise line was then extended farther west and there was to be no slavery west of this line.

was unconstitutional. The constitution stated that slaveholders had the right to own property, which included slaves, since slaves weren’t human, according to the South.
There were three candidates in the election of 1848: Lewis Cass Martin Van Buren and Zachary Taylor. Cass was representing the democrats and was a man who believed in Popular Sovernty. Van Buren was nominated by the Free-Soil Party. Taylor was a war hero, a General from the Mexican War.
