The Crucible: Heroic Traits in John Proctor

In every novel there are heroic traits among the characters that appear in the story. Heroic traits are also apparent in the nature of humanity. In this book, out of all the characters that are written, John Proctor is the character that displays the traits of a hero. He is a respected member of the town of Salem and is seen as a sort of role model. John is seen this way because he strives to do good in all that he does.
John Proctor has good intention but he has made a grave mistake in his past before the story begins. He had committed the crime of adultery with his servant, Abigail Williams. His wife became aware of this and threw Abigail out of their house and never forgave John. ...

have to tell the truth of his mistake of lechery. This will ruin his reputation in the town because he is seen as a good man. He sees himself as a corrupt and sinful man, when in fact he is quite the opposite (1224).
John seeks to open the eyes of the court to the fact that there is no witchcraft in Salem. During the story, John tries to get all the girls accused of witchcraft to confess that they were only dancing and having a good time in the woods. Even though John has proof of this, the judges see themselves as infallible and do not attempt to see the matter fairly in this dilemma (1250-62). This upsets John because so many others have either died because of vengeance or have been forced to lie to save their own lives and then blame another.
As the play ends, John is announced to hang. He does not want to confess to witchcraft when that itself is a lie. This marks the characteristics of his heroicness. Although he eventually confesses, John in the end decides that he ...
