We know what it is, see it every day, and disregard it as of no consequence. It is smoking, the single most preventable cause of premature death in the United States. In fact, approximately 400, 000 Americans die per year from smoking ciggerettes. Smoking is obviously dangerous but there are ways in which it could possibly be reduced.
Both men and women are succeptible to a higher risk of lung cancer if they smoke. On average, for a male smoker the chances of getting lung cancer are 22 times greater then for a male that does not smoke. For women, they have 12 times the risk of a non-smoker. Around 80% of adult smokers said that they started to smoke sometime before their 18 birth day. According to them 31.8% of people with less than a high school education smoked, while 18.3% of people with more than 12 years of schooling smoked.
