The Decline of Agriculture Education

In 1862, a law came into effect that established land grant universities in every state. The law was called the Land Grant Act and it changed the future of agricultural education. Since the act was passed, agricultural education has been offered in public secondary schools to teach new science technology applied to agriculture. This shows that agricultural education has a strong past in American education. Even so, agricultural education has declined in high school education due to the following: improved technology has allowed for fewer farmers feeding more people, students now stereotype agriculture as “farming”, and there are fewer teachers certified in agriculture.

of teenage students were asked “What is agriculture”, they would commonly answer “farming”. To them, agriculture is the production of food from a field or milking a cow. Students forget that agriculture is the oldest and most important of the sciences. This is because agriculture is the production of food and fiber, and without it humans would not survive. Students think that it is not practical for them to take agriculture education. After all, why would they need to know how to butcher a calf? In reality, students would never need to know how, unless they are taking an agricultural class specializing in meats.
Another reason why agricultural education is declining is that there are not enough teachers specialized in agriculture. If there are no teachers to teach a course that is already unpopular, that course will easily be eliminated from a school’s education.
