This essay will be discussing three historians’ views of the Roman occupation of Britain. These historians and their works have challenged how past historians looked at this period. The way in which these three historians look at Roman occupation of Britain is to say at the least diverse. From Hugh Kearney’s thirteen page overview in his book The British Isles: A History of Four Nations, to Peter Salway’s essay of 60 pages in Kenneth Morgan’s book The Oxford History of Britain. Kearney researches many different aspect of the Roman occupation, but he concludes that the most significant lasting influence was Christianity; “Of all Romanising influences, however, the most important was undoubtedly Christianity.” This statement confirms his cultural approach in looking at this era. This explains why in his post script he gives a brief synopsis of some economic, political, and militaristic research as an afterthought.
