Watercolor paintings have always been very interesting to me. It's amazing to think that such wonderful works of art can be created from blotches of color. For my final paper, I chose the Abstraction in Realism: Watercolors by Yuri Ozaki exhibit which is a solo show on display at the Kennedy-Douglas Center for Arts in Florence Alabama from February 15-March 30. While there were many wonderful and beautiful pieces to choose from to describe I chose three: In The Forest, Red Maple Leaves, and Lilies.

colors to create the light is fascinating. She strategically blots the blue on with a brush that has been dipped in water to dilute the color and paints a sky. Then using the grey, she creates various shades by diluting the grey with water and uses those shades to paint the trees. The tone of the colors of the trees also gives us an idea of the perspective the viewer is supposed to get.
The second work, Red Maple Leaves, is another 30"x22" canvas watercolor painting by Yuri Ozaki created around the same time as the first painting. The artist uses many colors in this painting including green and black. However, what really catches your eye in this work is Ozaki's brilliant use of red, orange and yellow. The leaves in this picture are an impressive example of focal point and contrast. Ozaki makes the bright leaves the centerpiece of the work by using the darker colors to create a contrast between the vibrant leaves and the surrounding space. The artist also uses the colors white and yellow to contrast the darker colors of the lilies to create negative space so that the lilies are the focal point of the work. Ozaki probably began with the flowers in this specific piece. It would seem that painting the flowers on before working on the back ground is logical because the lilies take up most of the space in the painting. To do this, she first blended the blue, purples and whites into her desired shade then diluted them using water.
