In 1949, the Federal Communications Commission introduced the fairness doctrine as a way to regulate media content and to make sure that “stations [were not] simply [using airtime] as advocates with a singular perspective” (Limburg). The fairness doctrine mandated that each station must give multiple perspectives to every issue covered and must “actively seek out issues of importance to their community and air programming that addressed those issues” (Limburg). The regulations set forth in the doctrine were ultimately observed until the 1980’s when corporation owners began to feel that the regulations were stepping on the feet of capitalism and their profit-making potential by forcing television stations to air ‘unfavorable’ view points.
