The sense of nationalism was going growing during those times and Canada was becoming more independent and having a more unique identity. the movie leaves some important topics out such as the treatment of first nations, the audience is left informed about the morals and attitudes and recent technology of that time. The cheerful image of Canada in the early 20[th] century painted by the producers is sensed by the viewer and stays with the viewer after watching the film

Indeed there were some troubling events happening during the 1920's such was World War I which caused the death of eight and a half million people. Such events which had long lasting effects on the Canadian people during those times, such as soldiers losing some of their limbs in a time period were prosthetics were not very advanced and their abilities were very limited. Only a short scene is shown with the soldiers attempting to do farm work with just one hand, but the scene that mentions the return of the soldiers has such a strong transition, with the horns going off and the large parade of marching soldiers.
